Pom poms have been used for decoration on garments for a long time back through history and the pom pom beanie has been traced back to the Viking era. A bronze statue was discovered in 1904 in Stockholm, Sweden. It represents Goddess Freya wearing a helmet adorned with a round ball. This is believed to be a decorative pom pom of wool or other material, although this interpretation is still debated.

The purpose for using pom poms was to hide the seams of a garment in a decorative way. This method was used already before the 11th century, which means it is older than knitting technology. In the time between 1500 and 1800, Scottish farmers wore a type of beanie called blue-cap. It was decorated with a pom pom. The name Pom-Pom comes from the French word "pompon" and began to be used in the late 19th century. It referred to a feather or fabric decoration in the hat or beanie. High pom-pom hats were used by Napoleon's infantry and were colour-coded based on their military division. The Scottish Highlands Regiment also wore pom-poms on their "Balmoral" caps until the 19th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, during the depression, the pom pom gained new popularity as it was cheap way of making clothes look more expensive.

The popularity of pom pom beanies increased once again during the 60's. Michael Nesmith, who was a member of the band The Monkees wore a pom pom beanie. Pom pom beanies retained their popularity during the 80's and 90's and as we have entered into the new millennium, the designers have become very creative in making pom pom beanies. There are beanies with pom poms of fur, neon material, glitter and more. There are pom pom beanies available to suit most tastes and personalities and they come in a variety of materials and colours.
